Shanivar (Saturday) is dedicated to Shani Devta (Saturn), who is one of the Navagrahas or nine planets.
Saturn sits in a mirror chariot, yoked with eight black horses.
The Saturday fast keeps away all the hurdles and misfortunes.
It is considered to be highly beneficial and most significant of all the weekly Vrats.
This Vrat can win the blessing of Shani Dev and remove the ill effects of a weak Shani in the Kundali.
The fast should be started from Saturday of Shukla paksha of any month or the first Saturday of Shravan month and is observed regularly for 11 or 51 Saturdays.
The Fast starts from the sunrise and the devotee take bath and wear black or blue clothes.
They worship Saturn idols made of iron, one can visit nearby Shani temples and offer Black flowers, black sesame seeds (til).
Horse bean (Black urad) and black clothes are used for worship.
Black articles and Mustard oil are given in donation. Devotees also feed ants with whole wheat flour.
The recitation of Shani Chalisa is also beneficial and one should read Shani Vrat Katha.
After the day-long fast food is taken two hours after the sunset.
